Breast Cancer

Researchers are closer than ever to curing this deadly disease. In-depth explanations, along with first-hand accounts from breast cancer survivors, will de-mystify the newest treatments and techniques.

What You Can Do About Breast Cancer:

Do a Self-Exam
Every month if you're 20 or older. Get a clinical breast exam every three years from age 20 to 39, and every year after that. Have a mammogram every year from age 40 on.

Eat Low-Fat Foods
Include pleanty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. They're good for your general health and may help prevent breast cancer. Olive and canola oil are another good bet: These mono- unsaturated fats appear to lower breast cancer risk.

Avoid Extra Pounds
Being overweight may put you at risk.

Don't Smoke
If you do smoke, try to quit. While no one has found a direct link between smoking and breast cancer, it clearly increases your risk for many other cancers and for heart disease.

Drink Moderately
Or not at all. Women who have even one or two alcoholic drinks a day run a somewhat higher risk of breast cancer than those who don't.

Exercise Often
At least 30 minutes most days of the week. It's good for your overall health, and some studies suggest that exercise may cut your breast cancer risk.
