Advanced Colon Cancer: Catching a Killer
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States today, but the sad truth is most of those deaths could've been prevented with a simple test. Colonoscopy done at the right time could've stopped cancer in its earliest stages and, with proper follow up, the patient might never develop the disease.
Once cancer develops in the colon, if it is not caught early, it can spread to the surrounding tissues, the lymph nodes and then, ultimately, throughout the body. Once that spread occurs, the disease is not curable and survival is measured in months and weeks rather than years. But there are new treatments available that are extending the lives of patients with such advanced disease.
