Bone Marrow Transplants: Graft vs. Host Disease

Understanding
BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS: Graft vs. Host Disease

People with diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma or Hodgkinıs Disease may need a bone marrow transplant to survive. These transplants save lives, but they can be accompanied by several risk factors. The patientıs immune system may reject the transplant. Also, the donorıs cells may attack the patientıs organs and tissues; this is called Graft-versus-host Disease (GvHD) and it can be a major complication of bone marrow transplants. The closer the match between the donorıs and patientıs tissue type, the less likely it is that rejection or GvHD will occur.

This program carefully explains the procedure of bone marrow transplantation, the importance of clinical trials and what is being done to combat GvHD with newly developed pharmaceuticals.

BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS: Graft vs. Host Disease is co-hosted by Richard E. Champlin, M.D., Professor and Chairman, Department of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, M.D. Anderson Clinic, Roy Baynes, M.D,. Ph.D., Director of Hematology and Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant Program, Barbara Ann Karmonos Institute; Jeffrey Margolis, M.D., The Oakland Medical Group and Steven Pavletic, M.D., University of Nebraska.
