The Benefits of Clinical Trials: Breakthroughs in Breast Cancer
Boca Raton, FL - This year, more than 180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent advances in research and treatment for breast cancer have enabled women to live longer and have a better quality of life than women diagnosed 20 years ago. Now, if a woman is diagnosed in the earliest stages of breast cancer, she has a 95 percent chance of living longer. Breast cancer is becoming more manageable, and numerous treatments offer promise and hope for women faced with the disease.
The advances in breast cancer research are the result of treatments tested and proven in clinical trials. Clinical trials offer state-of-the art cancer care. Claudine has battled breast cancer for years. She credits the quality care she received in clinical trials with saving her life. Colleen, another participant, has a long family history of breast cancer. Both women feel fortunate that they could participate in a clinical trial. Still, most patients are unaware of clinical trials or fear the costs will not be covered by insurance. Even though clinical trials frequently offer the best hope of effective treatment, only 3 percent of cancer patients participate in them.
Breakthrough cancer fighting drugs such as tamoxifen and raloxifene, both of which demonstrate measurable cancer fighting results, have been developed in clinical trials.
