Breakthroughs in Depression: Old Problem, New Therapy
Depression is more than "having a bad day." It's a serious, but very treatable illness that plagues its sufferers with feelings of worthlessness, guilt and hopelessness. Left untreated, suicide can be the result.
Over 340 million people worldwide suffer from some sort of depression. Even people who are not personally depressed are affected by it in some way: through a friend, family member or co-worker. Getting over the idea that depression is a "character flaw" continues to be a major challenge in providing treatment.
Doctors are using new medicines that focus on neuron loss, which can cause depression. To learn the signs of depression and what new treatment plans are out there, watch BREAKTHROUGHS IN DEPRESSION: Old Problem, New Therapy, a TV special co-hosted by Dennis Charney, M.D., Deputy Chairman, Academic and Scientific Affairs at Yale University's Department of Psychiatry.
This 30-minute documentary was created by Information Television Network (ITV) for The Health Network as part of ITV's award winning series, The Cutting Edge Medical Report, and was made possible by an educational grant from Pharmacia Corporation and Janssen Pharmaceutica.
BREAKTHROUGHS IN DEPRESSION: Old Problem, New Therapy premieres on May 1st at 9:30 ET, and will air several more times this spring on The Health Network. The program is co-hosted by Dennis Charney, M.D., Deputy Chairman, Academic and Scientific Affairs at Yale University, Department of Psychiatry.
