Leukemia: Targeting a Killer

Boca Raton, FL -  Leukemia -- cancer of the bone marrow and blood - comes in different forms, depending upon the cells that are affected.  There are thousands of patients living with Leukemia in the U.S. today.  A generation ago, this disease was uniformly fatal, but since 1960, the survival rate has tripled thanks to advances from medical research.

Medical research has identified several ways to combat the illness:  chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation and bone marrow transplants.  New pharmaceutical research has developed new drugs that are used in what is called targeted therapies - drugs geared to more selectively kill cancer cells resulting in fewer side effects.  One such drug has been successful in treating patients over 60 years of age with relapsed Leukemia.  Another is being developed to help chronic myelogenous Leukemia patients.

LEUKEMIA: Targeting a Killer, an informative, 30-minute TV special, premieres on The Health Network on Monday, March 5 at 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. ET.
