Melanoma: From SPF to Rx
Melanoma causes the most deaths from skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 47,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year. Of those, over 7 thousand will die of melanoma. Traditionally, melanoma has been treated with surgery, but this technique is not always completely successful, especially if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, which can increase the risk of relapse to over 50%.
But there have been headline-making breakthroughs. In recent years, collaborative efforts among researchers have provided new hope through advancements in therapy and diagnoses, particularly regarding molecular genetics, immunology and the role of cytokines and interferon. There are new vaccines in clinical trials with interferon - already an FDA-approved cancer-fighting drug - and other cytokines and growth factors.
MELANOMA: From SPF to Rx shows the great forward strides in the fight to cure melanoma. This program is co-hosted by John Kirkwood, M.D., Director of The Melanoma Center at Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
This 30-minute documentary program, produced as part of ITV¹s award-winning The Cutting Edge Medical Report, airs over Fox¹s The Health Network and is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant by Vical, Inc. and Maxim Pharmaceuticals.
