Memory, Aging & Alzheimer's: The Importance of Early Detection
What if you couldn't remember how to tie your shoes? Answer a phone? Didn't know your address? Or recognize the face of your son or daughter? These are some of the frightening things that happen to Alzheimer's patients. Regrettably, Alzheimer's patients aren't the only victims. The people who care for them suffer as well ? from fatigue, emotional distress and financial woes. Currently, over 4 million people exist in the grip of Alzheimer's disease, costing society well over $100 billion annually. That number is expected to double every twenty years.
Not even world leaders are exempt from the threat. President Reagan announced in 1995 that he suffered from this irreversible disease, which brought a great deal of attention to the lack of knowledge about it. Since that time, awareness has increased, new medications have become available, therapy techniques have been improved, and better support groups for caregivers have been developed.
