Psoriasis: Coping with the Stigma
Nearly 7 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with the chronic skin disease, Psoriasis. Although the exact cause of Psoriasis is unknown, it is believed to be related to faulty signals sent by the bodyÕs immune system. Generally appearing as patches of raised red skin covered by a flaky white buildup, psoriasis is not contagious but does have a genetic component that makes certain people more likely to develop it. It may also be triggered by external or environmental factors.
While the physical impact on the skin is usually the focus of treatment there are also some fairly significant social and emotional implications that patents must deal with. According to John Koo, M.D., a dermatologist specializing in the treatment of psoriasis, eczema and other skin conditions, "Recognizing and acknowledging the social implications of psoriasis is an important step in learning to cope with the disease. The stigma, frustration, despair and depression can often be as difficult to treat as the physical symptoms."
In an episode of The Cutting Edge Medical Report entitled "Psoriasis: Coping with the Stigma," John Koo, M.D., University of California, San Francisco, explores the physical and psychosocial aspects of this skin disease and unveils the keys to successful treatment.
Produced by Information Television Network and made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Allegan, "Psoriasis: Cooping with the Stigma" premieres on The Health Network, part of the networks of Discovery Communications, Inc. on Sunday, June 9, 6:30 p.m. ET and Wednesday, June 12, at 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. ET.
